## How to choose a UI/UX design agency

### What a UI/UX design agency does

A UI/UX agency works out what your product should do and how it should feel, then designs every screen to a standard your engineers can build. UX covers research, flows and structure. UI covers the visual layer: layout, type, colour and components.

Most agencies sell the same core work: user research, information architecture, wireframes, a clickable prototype, final UI and a handoff to engineering. Some also build the product. Check which one you are buying before you compare prices.

### Agency vs freelancer vs in-house

| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | You need research, UX and UI from a team on a fixed timeline | Higher cost, and juniors doing work sold by seniors |
| Freelancer | One clear piece of work with a defined scope | One person's availability and skill range |
| In-house | Design work is continuous and core to the product | Hiring time and a narrow range of experience |

Many teams use an agency for the first version, then hire in-house to keep it going. Our [agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide](https://globaluxagency.com/blog/ux-agency-vs-freelancer-vs-in-house/) goes deeper.

### What it costs

Agency projects on this list fall into four typical bands. A UX audit or research sprint usually costs $5K to $15K. An MVP or app v1 usually costs $15K to $50K. A full redesign across platforms usually costs $50K to $150K. Design systems across several teams usually start at $150K.

Where agencies publish an hourly rate, the range on this list runs from $40 to $300 per hour. Read the [UX design cost guide](https://globaluxagency.com/ui-ux-design/cost/) for what moves the price within each band.

### How to shortlist

- **Filter by budget first.** Drop anyone whose tier is above what you can spend. It saves the most time.
- **Check for shipped work in your space.** A live product you can use tells you more than a portfolio image.
- **Read the "Not the right fit" line.** If it describes you, move on.
- **Pick three.** Fewer leaves you nothing to compare. More turns into weeks of calls.

### 10 questions to ask

1. Can you show me a live product you designed that is similar to ours?
2. Who exactly will work on our project, and how much of their week is ours?
3. What research will you do before you design screens?
4. How do you hand designs over to our engineers?
5. What is in the price, and what would cost extra?
6. How do you handle a change in scope halfway through?
7. How do you test designs with real users?
8. What does accessibility mean in your process?
9. Can we speak to a client from the last 12 months?
10. What would make you turn this project down?

### Red flags

- A fixed price before anyone has asked about your users or constraints.
- Case studies with no live product, no metric and no client name.
- No research phase, or research that is one workshop.
- Senior people on the pitch call who disappear once you sign.
- Pressure to sign quickly with a discount that expires.

### How to write a brief

A good brief gets you accurate quotes and fewer calls. Cover what you are building and for whom, what has to be true at launch, your budget band, your start date and what already exists. One page is enough.

Our guide on [how to write a UX design brief agencies can actually quote](https://globaluxagency.com/blog/how-to-write-a-ux-design-brief/) has a template. When it is ready, you can [send it to us](https://globaluxagency.com/ui-ux-design/#brief) and we will introduce three agencies.

## Questions buyers ask us

Q: How much does a UI/UX design agency cost?
A: Most agency projects fall between $15K and $150K. A UX audit or research sprint can come in under $15K, and a design system across several products is usually $150K or more. Hourly rates on this list run from $40 to $300, where agencies publish them. Our [cost guide](https://globaluxagency.com/ui-ux-design/cost/) explains what moves the price.

Q: How is this list ordered?
A: It is an editorial order while our first scored run is in progress. Each agency will be scored on our published 100-point rubric, and the scored order replaces this one when it is published in Q4 2026. No agency can pay to move up.

Q: Why do only some agencies have a star rating?
A: We only show a rating where Clutch publishes one, and we link to the Clutch profile so you can read the reviews. Where Clutch has no rating we show "No rating yet". We do not write or collect reviews ourselves yet.

Q: Should I hire an agency, a freelancer or an in-house designer?
A: Hire an agency when you need research, UX and UI from a team on a fixed timeline. A freelancer suits one clear piece of work at a lower cost. An in-house designer makes sense once design work is continuous. Our [comparison guide](https://globaluxagency.com/blog/ux-agency-vs-freelancer-vs-in-house/) covers each option.

Q: How long does a UI/UX design project take?
A: A UX audit usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. An MVP design with research and a clickable prototype usually takes 8 to 14 weeks. A full redesign of an existing product often runs 4 to 9 months in phases. These are typical ranges from agency proposals, not guarantees.

Q: How many agencies should I talk to before I choose?
A: Three is usually enough. Fewer gives you nothing to compare, and more turns into weeks of calls. Send the same brief to each, then compare how they question your riskiest assumption. You can also [get three matched agencies](https://globaluxagency.com/ui-ux-design/#brief) from us in 48 hours.

Q: Can agencies pay to appear on this list?
A: No. Inclusion and order come from public evidence. We may sell one labelled sponsored slot per page, and it sits outside the list. Our [disclosure page](https://globaluxagency.com/disclosure/) explains every way the site makes money.

## Get 3 matched agencies

Send a brief at https://globaluxagency.com/get-matched/ or POST JSON to https://globaluxagency.com/api/v1/brief with fields: type, industry, budget, start, email, site, notes. A person reads every brief and introduces three agencies within 48 hours. Free for buyers.
